THE NEUNENEU TOUR JULY 06 with Marlui Miranda, RAVI and the Mehenaku Indians
Read the Independant, Guardian and New Statesman articles on the NEUNENEU page on this web site
From The Guardian article by Pascal Wyse: "As cultural melting pots go, it's pretty rich: a shaman from the Amazonian Mehinako tribe, eating a pizza in an Italian restaurant, in Brazil, accompanied by, among others, a Manchester-born musician who specialises in a West African instrument. But culturally, Yanuno Mehinako - the shaman - is the one furthest away from home. Along with his four sons he has traded his village for the concrete jungle of Sao Paulo - the first step on a much bigger journey, in which members of the tribe will leave Brazil for the first time to perform their music in the UK"
From the review by Phil Meadley in The Independant: "The term "world music" was invented for nights like this. Aside from Ravi's virtuoso kora playing and Marlui Miranda's passionate interpretation of Brazilian Indian music, this UK tour is to showcase the spirit dance and chanting of the Amazonian Mehinaku tribe, five of whom are here tonight, performing in the the UK for the first time"
* "Neuneneu" (Humanity) the project Ravi has developed with Marlui Miranda was a UK CMN tour (Contemporary Music Network) in which they performed Amazonian indian music with Brazilian indians from the Mehenaku Tribe

"THE AFRO-BRAZILIAN PROJECT" by RAVI
* Ravi's album The Afro-Brazilian Project (ARC Music) was recorded when Ravi spent six months in Rio de Janeiro. While there, Ravi met living legend Hermeto Pascual at his home in Rio de Janeiro (there is more information on this website on the Afro-Brazil Project and Articles pages)
RAVI with Gilberto Gil, Brazil's most well known singer and Minister of Culture
Praise for "The Afro-Brazilian Project"
Straight No Chaser "The kora brings
more of the rising and falling of the sea to the already sea-like
samba. It fits in with guitars like it was always a natural part
of Brazilian music. Ravi's compositions are delicate and downbeat,
a groove is built on "Berimbao' with an angelic wordless vocal chorus. The
meditative "Amazonian Journey one" shows the beauty of Marlui Miranda's
voice in a very pure and pristine moment, particularly because of
the grace and poise of her tune"
