Overtone
Choir -
Sound and Light
The
Overtone Choir merges the overone styles of Mongolia (khoomi)
and the western style, with instruments, not normaly associated
with these forms of singing; such as gongs, bells, singing bowls,
tambora and an aeolian (wind) harp (made by Ravi)'.
The
fundamental difference between Overtone Music and current western
music is the use of the Harmonic Series or Scale. This scale
has octaves in a numerical series; 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 etc.,
reflecting the harmony of the atoms and the stars. It is naturally
present in all human voices. As the series ascends new notes
appear in a cascade that spirals into infinity. It is this unending
variety, opportunity for unusual harmony and connection to all
things that captivates the ear and the heart. The Ground Tone
or Drone, that supports and carries all overtones, grounds and
invigorates the body while the overtones themselves cleanse,
renew, balance and harmonise the entire human energy system.
Our journey into the intricacies and wonder of arranging for
layered overtone voices has excited our passion, our sense of
adventure and confirmed our commitment to singing, being and
healing together in harmony. The wind harp on this recording
was played by air that passed over rolling, grassy fields and
an oak encircled lake, the same view we had while recording
and mixing. May these sounds enhance your editations, relaxations
and other inner-journeys bringing you power, light and love.
Overtone
Singing......a description:
'The
Natural Harmonic Scale, arising from the human voice when producing
overtones, is inherant in all of nature, from the planets to
the tiniest grain of sand. Overtones connect us, not only with
the outer world, but by subtly altering our perception, lead
us on an inner journey, beyond intellect and emotion to commune
with universal soul'

Overtone singing is a style of singing native
to Central Asia, notably in Tibet, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and
Uzbekistan. The inspiration behind this recording is the multi-talented
Ravi, several of whose diverse projects we
have reviewed over the last few years. He is assisted by two
other vocalists. The Overtone Choir merges the overtone styles
of Mongolia (khoomi) with instruments not normally associated
with this form of singing; such as gongs, bells, singing bowls,
tambura, and an aeolian (wind) harp, made by Ravi. The entirely
natural sounds (sometimes hard to believe) are sequenced here
and there, providing a delightfully spacey, hypnotically surreal
pillow of sound.
